Phasing out of amalgam (mercury) fillings.

A treaty was signed in Japan in October that included the world-wide phasing-down of dental amalgam. Dental amalgam contains mercury. The convention encourages the use of alternative materials such as composite (white) filling materials wherever possible. This is something we have being doing for some time.

Rise in oral cancer linked to HPV virus.

Sadly there is an increasing number of young patients (aged 20-30) developing cancer in their mouth. This is thought to be linked to the HPV virus ( Human Papillo Virus) and is related to sexual habits. Treatment of oral cancer involves radical, often disfiguring, surgery. Long term survival rates are poor, regular dental examinations are essential even if a person has healthy teeth and gums to check the skin in the mouth for early signs of the disease.

Do not brush straight after eating.

When we eat carbohydrates, including sugars, the enamel on out teeth is softened. If we brush at this point we will rub our enamel away. leave it an hour after eating before brushing or, better still, brush before eating.

Never eat just before bed.

At night our saliva flow dramatically drops. Any acid in our mouth will not be washed away and will linger around our teeth, causing more damage.

Do not rinse your mouth out after brushing.

Rinsing, including with a mouthwash, washes the fluoride off the teeth so it does not have much time to act. Dentists recommend brushing teeth then just spitting the excess toothpaste out, leaving the rest around the teeth so it can keep working.
